Subject Leader Statement
At Edenbridge Primary School, we aim to make Maths practical, engaging, and challenging, fostering fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Lessons focus on building a strong understanding of concepts alongside essential skills, with an emphasis on number and calculation from the start. We are committed to ensuring progression in Maths for all pupils, providing support and challenge tailored to individual needs. This enables every child to build on their knowledge and achieve their full potential, regardless of their starting point. |
Curriculum Intent
At Edenbridge Primary, our approach to teaching Mathematics is driven by the intent to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts and skills in all pupils. We strive to equip learners with the ability to solve problems, think critically, and apply their knowledge creatively across different contexts. Our carefully structured Maths curriculum focuses on fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, ensuring that every child builds a strong foundation in number sense and numerical operations, enabling them to approach mathematical challenges with confidence. Through engaging and stimulating tasks, we nurture curiosity and foster a genuine love for mathematics. We emphasize the relevance of mathematics in everyday life, helping pupils make meaningful connections between mathematical concepts and real-world applications. Encouraging resilience and a growth mindset is at the heart of our teaching, ensuring that children see challenges as valuable opportunities for learning and development. Guided by the national curriculum and enriched through the White Rose Maths resources, our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to learners of all abilities. |
Curriculum Implementation
To realise our intent, we implement a comprehensive and cohesive teaching structure for Mathematics that includes:

Times Tables
Learning times tables is an essential part of your child’s mathematical education. Children who have mastered their tables gain a solid foundation in mathematics that will help them throughout their progression within the subject. The Government introduced an online Multiplication Tables Check for children in Year 4 from the 2019/20 academic year onwards. The purpose of the Multiplication Tables Check is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. By the time children reach the end of Year 4, the expectation is that their times tables should be secure so that they are able to answer any times table question mentally within a five second period. As part of the progression planning for the Multiplication Tables Check we have created a Times Tables Progression Plan to ensure children are ready for the check at the end of Year 4. From Year 2 each new Times Table is introduced at the start of each Term. Children have a short test at the end of each week, increasing in difficulty if appropriate and the specific table is taught for the term.
By the time children reach the end of KS2, the expectation is that their times tables should be secure so that they are able to answer any times table question mentally within a five second period. |
Curriculum Impact
At Edenbridge Primary School, our mathematics curriculum ensures that children understand the relevance and importance of their learning in relation to real-world concepts. They recognise that Maths is a vital life skill that they will rely on in many aspects of their daily lives. Our children develop a positive attitude towards Maths by learning in an environment where the subject is promoted as exciting and enjoyable. They are encouraged to investigate, ask questions, and understand that making mistakes is part of the learning journey, helping to strengthen their understanding. They are confident to ‘have a go’, selecting the equipment and strategies that best support their learning. Children at Edenbridge Primary School have a clear understanding of their strengths and next steps in Maths. They take pride in their work, which is reflected in the high standard seen in their books. Our teaching sequences provide strong coverage of fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving, ensuring a well-rounded mathematical education. Through high-quality feedback and targeted interventions, we support all children in striving to be the best mathematicians they can be. Our school maintains high standards through rigorous internal and external moderation, and our children progress well in mathematics. |
