Subject Leader Statement

PSHE is an important part of supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing. It helps children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.  Our PSHE Curriculum gives children a range of opportunities for personal development and reflection through the use of Jigsaw PSHE.

Curriculum Intent

Our PSHE curriculum aims to:

-Promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;

-Prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;

-Promote British values;

-Build children’s capacity for learning;

-Equip children for life.

Curriculum Implementation

Pupil participation is integral to the school’s vision and ethos; there are clear structures in place to capture pupil’s voice and pupils have a range of opportunities to influence decisions which affect them. Our children are encouraged to have self-belief; be able to reflect on their emotions and to have an understanding of the wider world. Each classroom is equipped with worry boxes and the zones of regulation displays are interactive to allow the children to express their feelings and emotions. It also assists with self-regulation.

Our PSHE scheme – Jigsaw – holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. There is a strong emphasis on building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health as a whole-school approach. Our Jigsaw lessons include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

How the picture fits together

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year. Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.Puzzles are launched with a whole-school assembly containing an original song, with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year, facilitating whole-school learning themes.

The various teaching and learning activities are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation and the Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the National Early Years Framework (England).
